Safety precautions while driving among large trucks

Many drivers in California face heavy traffic on a regular basis, and the presence of large trucks on the road increases the chances of a major accident. Trucks are much larger and heavier than cars, so accidents that involve them often include serious injuries and even death. Driving around commercial trucks requires different rules than driving among cars, and motorists can reduce the risk of accidents by following certain safety tips.

According to FindLaw, accidents involving large trucks are, of course, often caused by the truck drivers themselves. This may be due to:

  • Increased speeds
  • Fatigue
  • Distraction
  • Inadequate training

Many accidents, however, are the fault of other drivers on the road. This is often because some  motorists do not know how to maneuver around trucks, and risky driving behavior, such as unsafe passing, improper merging and abrupt lane changing, can lead to accidents.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration outlines some tips for motorists when large trucks are in the vicinity. Drivers need to understand that trucks have numerous, and large, blind spots. A good way to tell if it is a blind spot is if a motorist is unable to see the truck driver in the side mirror. Buses and trucks need more room to speed up, slow down and stop, so it is important to give them extra space when passing, merging or cutting in.

They also need more space when making a turn, so always stay back or move to the side to avoid getting hit. When driving behind a large vehicle, make sure not to tailgate, and leave more space when stopped on an incline, as a truck may roll back.
