What errors can cause truck accidents?

Truck accidents in California can be devastating. Because of the large size of semis, 18-wheelers, etc. relative to other vehicles on the road, collisions often result in death or catastrophic injury for occupants of smaller cars and trucks. This is especially true of accidents that occur on highways and interstates that involve greater speeds.

The advocacy group called Stop Unsafe Trucks lists a number of common errors that can result in truck accidents.

1. Driver errors

A truck driver can commit errors due to carelessness, fatigue, substance use or other factors. Some are under pressure to disregard regulations in the interest of economic gain, while others receive inadequate training to handle safety concerns properly despite obtaining the required special license to operate a large truck or similar commercial vehicle.

2. Equipment issues

Even a safe driver may become involved in an accident if the equipment in the truck is faulty. This may occur due to poor maintenance or defective manufacturing. Failure of one truck part can result in a catastrophic breakdown due to the different systems involving many moving parts all operating at the same time.

3. Company Policies

Despite regulations in place to ensure safe operation and guard against accidents, some trucking companies put profit ahead of safety by imposing unrealistic expectations and schedules on truckers. In a rush to meet a deadline, a driver may experience distracting conditions of stress and fatigue that can cause him or her to make dangerous mistakes or poor choices, such as failing to secure the load properly or exceeding the speed limit. Furthermore, even a safe driver may give in to the temptation to ignore safety rules if he or she would otherwise face a financial consequence.
