When are motorcycle crashes most likely to occur?

The spring and summer months bring the best weather of the year for motorcycle riders. Feeling the breeze on the open road only gets better as the temperature rises.

It is during these times that you should be more careful when riding. Summertime can be more dangerous for motorcycle owners than other times of the year.

When exactly is the most dangerous time to ride?

The entire summer usually has more than triple the fatal motorcycle crashes of winter, with the most occurring in July. Almost half of these accidents happen on the weekend--the majority being in the afternoon or evening. A study of U.S. motorcycle deaths shows that in 2017, the most dangerous time to ride was a July weekend after 6 p.m.

Numerous factors contribute to the higher accident rate

There isn't just one reason that roads are more dangerous in the summer. A few of the factors that contribute are :

  • People going on vacation means that roads are more crowded with non-local drivers who are less familiar with the terrain
  • Teen (less experienced) drivers are out of school and on the road in bigger numbers
  • More roadway construction happens during the summer
  • Higher temperatures increase the chances of a tire blow out

Being aware of these hazards can keep you safer as the roads get more dangerous. You should watch out for inexperienced drivers who might not know how to drive safely alongside motorcycle riders. Make sure your bike is in good condition and always be ready for sudden stops around road work and sudden lane changes by motorists who are not alert to your presence.

An accident is a surefire way to ruin your summer joyride. Being aware of the dangerous times to ride and what causes those dangers may decrease your risk.
