Truck cameras and auto accidents: what you should know

As a California motorist, you should be aware of the latest technology that trucking companies use for their commercial vehicles. Some of this technology includes recording devices that are installed on commercial trucks. In the event you or someone you know get involved in an accident with a big truck, any recording tech that is installed on that truck could be important to your case.

As FleetOwner explains, many trucks have cameras that record the inside of the truck cab during a drive. Over the years, manufacturers have been advancing this technology to create higher quality images by developing cameras to record in high-definition imagery. Progression in recording tech has also enabled truck cameras to capture improved imagery during periods of low light or even the nighttime.

This technology could have a strong impact on an auto accident case. For one thing, these recordings can capture an auto accident as it happens and help show who was truly at fault in the collision. In-cab cameras can show the truck driver's behavior leading up to and during the collision. Forward cameras may also display the position of the truck and other vehicles around it at the time of impact.

There should also be no legal problems with using camera footage in a court proceeding involving an auto accident with a truck. According to Engadget, as long as there is no reasonable expectation of privacy, a camera recording should be fine. Since auto accidents typically occur on public roads, it is very likely that camera footage showing the accident would be permitted under law.

However, be aware that it is possible for truck cameras to not fully capture all aspects of an auto accident. Some events may occur outside of the range of the camera. This makes it crucial to collect other forms of evidence, such as eyewitness testimony. If gaps are not filled that explain what happened out of camera range, it leaves the door open for the other party to claim the accident was not their fault.
