Bus crashes are dangerous, but uncommon

A bus driving down the Santa Monica Freeway recently rolled over and crashed. According to KNBC, there were 32 passengers onboard, and 25 were taken to local hospitals.

The bus was travelling from the Palo Casino, and law enforcement officers responded to a call about the crash at about 4 a.m. Passersby and first responders helped passengers get out of wrecked vehicle. Following the accident, only four of those injured were in serious condition.

Despite the potential for more injuries on large vehicles like buses, these accidents are relatively rare. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reports that in 2016, 4,440 large trucks and buses were part of crashes that resulted in fatalities. This is compared to around 20,800 fatal passenger vehicle crashes in 2016.

Bus crashes occur for a variety of reasons. This recent rollover accident on the Santa Monica Freeway is still under investigation. The California Highway Patrol stated it would be looking to see whether the driver had fallen asleep, or if there was some other cause for the accident. Some common causes for bus accidents include:

  • Driver speeding
  • Driver distraction
  • Driver being impaired, whether from lack of sleep, alcohol or illness
  • Passengers misbehaving and distracting the driver
  • Driver making an error, like failing to check a blind spot
  • Faulty equipment on the bus

Like a passenger vehicle, a bus is only as safe as the person behind the wheel. If a bus driver is distracted or is suffering from lack of sleep, accidents can occur. If you have been injured in an accident involving a bus, the last thing you want to worry about is how to pay for your medical costs. You may want to reach out to an attorney skilled in representing those injured in motor vehicle accidents. He or she can help you receive the care you need.
