Why do car accidents happen?

Car accidents are frightening and life-changing events that happen when least expected. According to USA Today, in 2016, 40,200 people died in car accidents. Though there are laws and practices in place to ensure the safety of every motorist, passenger and pedestrian on the roads in Oakland and across the country. However, they are not enough to keep some motor vehicle collisions from occurring. If you spend any time on the streets and highways, then you know how congested traffic can be.

While most drivers are aware and respectful of traffic rules and laws, there are some individuals who are not. They only care about getting to their destinations and are not concerned with who they endanger to do so. Their actions often make the roads more hazardous for motorists. Here are some common reasons car accidents happen.

Rolling through red lights during right turns

Drivers are required to stop when they arrive at red lights before proceeding. Instead, many of them slow down as they are approaching red lights. They then check for traffic coming from their left sides, without bothering to recheck what is in front of and across from them.

Falling asleep at the wheel

Motorists must stay alert and attentive so they can safely operate their vehicles. When they are tired or fatigued, they are not as alert as they need to be and are more likely to have near miss situations and car accidents.

Using distractions while driving

Distracted driving is a major problem on roadways across the country. Drivers eat, operate their vehicles' radios, use their cellphones and other methods of distractions to keep themselves interested in the task of driving.

Car accidents are preventable. They do not need to happen. When the above factors and others come into play, they make the roads less safe for everyone.
