Fast speeds major contributing factor in traffic fatalities

Car accidents are becoming more common on the roads of Oakland. Though there are many factors to consider about motor vehicle collisions, excessive speeds play a major role in the majority of them. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 32 percent of car accident fatalities that occurred in 2014 were because of excessive speeds.

Drivers must adhere to all traffic rules and speed limits to maximize their safety on their roads. However, some motorists do not care about the risks they face from speeding. Many of them are more concerned with their situations and reaching their destinations faster and are distracted and overconfident in their driving skills. These factors and more increase the likelihood of speeding motorists crashing their vehicles.

The faster the speed, the less time drivers have to react to avoid accidents. There is also a greater force of impact. Car accident victims are more likely to suffer severe injuries when fast speeds are a factor, states Curbed.com.

Motorists can prevent car accidents by improving their driving behaviors. Following all posted speed limits instead of using the flow of traffic and their personal driving preferences enhances the flow of traffic and makes it more predictable. Adhering to traffic rules and obeying posted traffic signs and regulatory signals also make the roads safer.

It is not possible to prevent all car accidents. But the risk of serious injuries and death is lower when drivers avoid distractions, alcohol, medications and drugs that cause impairment and do not rush when they are on the roads.
