Avoid these common motorcycle accidents

It's been said that four wheels move the body, but two wheels move the soul. It's also been said that catching a yellow jacket in your shirt at 70 miles per hour can double your vocabulary. Motorcycle riding can be both tremendously exhilarating and downright dangerous.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, there were 4,976 motorcycle fatalities in 2016 due to crashes, which was more than double the number of 1997 motorcyclist deaths. Motorcycle fatalities accounted for 13 percent of all motor vehicle crash deaths in 2016.

Accidents happen

Becoming aware of the causes of motorcycle crashes can help you possibly avoid them happening to you. Here are the most common accidents that could happen to you:

  • A vehicle turns left in front of you: Maybe the car doesn't see you or misjudges your speed, but the most common of all motorcycle accidents happen when a car turns in front of you at an intersection.
  • A vehicle changes lanes right into you: Sometimes you're riding in their blind spot or else they just don't notice your bike, but the car moves into your space.
  • Hit from behind: The most common car accident is the fender bender, when the vehicle behind fails to stop. A fender bender can kill a motorcyclist.
  • Open the door: You're driving along the row of cars parked at the curb and someone suddenly opens the door. It might be funny in the movies, but not in real life.
  • Full moon fever: A recent study has shed some light on an unlikely cause of motorcycle accidents. During nights when a full moon was overhead, fatal motorcycle accidents increased by 5 percent. Even more surprising, is when a supermoon (the rare time when the moon's orbit brings it closer to Earth than a regular full moon) was present, fatal motorcycle accidents increased by 32 percent.

When you're injured in a motorcycle accident, life can take a deadly turn. Being aware of motorcycle crash causes--and your surroundings--can keep your rides exhilarating and safe.
